On March 25, IAT Finance Director Kevin Noseworthy, IATNL Secretary/Youth Coordinator Caroline Swan, and Caroline’s first-year CNA Adventure Tourism students guided three Grade 5 classes from Humber Elementary School in Corner Brook on a 3-hour snowshoe trek to the Hummock above Frenchman’s Cove. The adventure began at 9:00am after a 30-minute bus ride from Corner Brook.
After donning their snowshoes – some for the first time, the group of approximately 60 students, parents, teachers, and guides headed for the Hummock, a 1,000ft (310m) round hill on the IATNL route between Benoit’s Cove and the Blow-Me-Down Mountains.

Along the way the kids received instruction in responsible hiking and snowshoeing, while being encouraged to enjoy the great outdoors, and stay healthy and fit.
Of course the trek wouldn’t be complete without a “boil up” along the way!
And the greatest challenge of all?
Well it would have to be rounding up three classes of 10-year olds for a group photo!! Kinda like herding cats!!!!

A week after their memorable snowshoe trek to the Hummock, IAT President Paul Wylezol ventured into the student’s indoor classroom at Humber Elementary to discuss the International Appalachian Trail and its mission to promote natural and cultural heritage, health and fitness, and environmental stewardship.
If the reception and many questions (“How long would it take to walk from Port aux Basques to Corner Brook?”) are any indication, the IAT trailbed in Western Newfoundland is fertile ground for the next crop of outdoor adventurers!
