The FC Ultra Extra is a 2 km (1.2 mi) extension off Hummock Trail which connects that trail to Blow Me Down Brook near The Sands (i.e., the sandy slope located at the vertex of the right-angled Blow Me Down Brook Gulch). The FC Ultra Extra serves as an important link for the UltramaTrex’s Ultra Extra long-distance trail route.
To hike the FC Ultra Extra from Route 450 above Frenchman’s Cove, hikers must first walk 1.7km (1 mi) of the Hummock Trail, beginning at the trailhead.
Once abreast of the Hummock, the FC Ultra Extra turns off to the right and crosses the small stream flowing out of Hummock Pond. After another 200m (655ft) winding and weaving through forest, the trail enters a 450m (1,475ft) long ankle-deep wetland, which provides a good side view of the Hummock.
After crossing the “mish” (Newfoundland colloquial for “marsh”), the trail veers off to the left and winds 800m (2,625ft) through dry scrub and forest until it reaches a small round hill that rises just 20m (65ft) above the trail but 150m (490ft) above Blow Me Down Brook to the west. A northwest facing lookout at the top provides a terrific view of the Blow Me Down Mountains and outer islands of the bay, including Weeball
while a south-facing vantage point provides an ideal view of the braided section of Blow Me Down Brook at The Sands
and Charlie’s Bottom mountain valley a little further south.
From here it’s a 580m (1,900ft) downhill trek to Blow Me Down Brook, which must be crossed to pick up the UltramaTrex, Blow Me Down Traverse, or any of the other IATNL Blow Me Down Mountain trail routes.
