In late July IATNL Chairperson Paul Wylezol flew in over the mountains east of Parsons Pond with Devil’s Bite Trail crew members Curtis Payne, Trent Foster, Caroline Swan and Troy Gaulton to complete an important section of trail above East Brook Gulch.
After a cloud-shrouded start, the weather cooperated nicely for 2 days, allowing the important and scenic stretch of trail to be completed in time for August hiking.
When complete, the Devil’s Bite Trail will extend from Middle Brook, Parsons Pond up the south side of the Flat Hills, around East Brook Gulch, Little Gulch, Main Gulch and Parsons Pond Inner Pond Gulch, then down Western Brook Gulch (of Parsons Pond) and back to Middle Brook. Though East Brook and Western Brook Gulches can be return-hiked in two days, the entire Devil’s Bite Trail loop will take a minimum of 4 days to walk.
Along the way hikers will get spectacular views of cliffs, lakes and streams, and catch fleeting glimpses of moose, caribou and black bear, before taking refreshing dips in the clear cool pools of cascading waterfalls.
